The Honolulu Rate Commission is considering several proposed fare policy changes that will affect TheBus and TheHandi-Van, and it invited the public to provide testimony at a Feb. 8 meeting.

The proposals include residential requirements for discounted fare eligibility, reduced fares for TheHandi-Van riders with extremely low income, and a fare schedule for the 2023 fiscal year.

According to a press release sent out Thursday, the “proposed changes will ensure the City’s transportation system is reliable, sustainable and able to meet the changing needs of Oahu’s public transportation riders.”

The meeting is scheduled for 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Mission Memorial Auditorium. The public may attend in-person (according to COVID-19 gathering guidelines) or via WebEx. Information on the agenda as well as how to participate virtually can be found here

Written testimony, which will include the testifier’s address, email and phone number, will be posted to the Rate Commission website for public viewing. It can be submitted via email to ratecomm@honolulu.gov or hchee@honolulu.gov; testimony may also be sent via fax to 808-768-4730.

Individuals who need special assistance in order to participate should contact Puni Chee at 808-768-8329 or hchee@honolulu.gov.
