HILO, Hawaii — Officials are investigating what caused tsunami warning sirens to sound in error on Hawaii Island Saturday night.

The initial investigation showed at least one siren in central Hilo began sounding shortly after 8:30 p.m., according to a tweet from Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency.

Authorities suggest it may have been “as a result of an electrical fault at the siren site,” the EMA tweet said.

After determining the siren was not intentional, authorities shut it off within five minutes, they said.
