The Department of Health announced the creation of a website that compiles environmental monitoring data from Maui, which was collected in the aftermath of the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires.
Since the Lahaina and Kula wildfires, DOH, government and other agencies have collected data from the air, ash, soil, sediments, beach sand, and coastal waters to determine if any hazardous substances produced by the fires are present at levels that could pose risks to people’s health or environment. Now, all of this data will be available through an online portal.
To assess the effectiveness of clean-up efforts, DOH and its partners are continuing to collect data, according to a news release. The state agency will update the site with air monitoring data every two to four weeks. Data on coastal water quality, sediments and monitoring at the West Maui Temporary Debris Storage Site will be updated quarterly.
The new site includes information to help people interpret and use the data. DOH hopes it will help keep the public informed about what areas and activities are safe and what protective measures people may need to take.
