Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe will undergo a series of improvements starting April 26 which will last for two years and involve the replacement of utility poles and reconstruction of sanitary sewer lines at the 400-acre park.

The project — a $4.53 million construction contract that was awarded to Mocon Corporation — is spread out over two phases. First, on April 26, Hawaiian Electric Company will use helicopters to replace four utility poles near the garden’s main entrance. The garden will be closed on this day, and work will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The second phase will occur in August and will involve a long-term effort to reconstruct approximately two miles of subterranean sewer lines that run throughout the gardens.

Careful planning was implemented to prevent the disruption of sanitary sewer service or bathroom closures and minimal impact to public facilities is expected. Historically significant locations were taken into consideration to be avoided.

Visitors are still advised to take precaution around the work sites respect construction barriers.
