Hawaiian Electric announced Tuesday morning via Twitter that 13,000 customers are without power in East Hawaii and in the Windward service areas including Hawaii Kai and Kaneohe.

The Department of Education released on its website shortly thereafter that five schools — Hahaione Elementary, Kamiloiki Elementary, Koko Head Elementary, Niu Valley Middle and Kaiser High — will be closed Tuesday due to the outages.

The source of the outage has been identified as broken equipment in a remote area inaccessible by truck that needs repair. At present, the updated restoration ETA is 2 p.m. per HECO.
