Fox is giving its new Hawaii action drama “Rescue: HI-Surf” a massive spotlight, airing the new series after Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9, 2025.
The new surfing drama will debut this fall and air on Mondays after the popular “9-1-1: Lone Star,” but the coveted time slot after the highly watched football championship could give the show an enormous boost in viewership.
Last year, CBS launched the new procedural show “Tracker,” based on Jeffery Deaver’s books, after Super Bowl LVIII. The show is the No. 1 new drama of the season.
“Rescue: HI-Surf” is perhaps a modern take on “Baywatch” (which was retooled “Baywatch: Hawaii” for a time during the run of the popular lifeguard franchise). The show is described as “an action-packed drama that follows the personal and professional lives of the heavy-water lifeguards who patrol and protect the North Shore of Oahu - the most famous and dangerous stretch of coastline in the world.”
Fox has already shown confidence in the new Hawaii show by ordering additional episodes, bringing the season total to 19.
“We believe this show has real franchise potential,” Fox TV Network president Michael Thorn said on Monday, according to Variety.
The new show set in Hawaii comes as fans around the world rally to save "NCIS: Hawaii," which was abruptly canceled after three seasons last month. Supporters of the show have taken to social media and paid for a billboard on Times Square urging CBS to un-cancel the series, which it did (twice) for “S.W.A.T.,” starring Shemar Moore.
However, CBS has said a renewal is not in the cards, even though the show averaged more than 10 million viewers. The network cited the high cost of production for series set in Hawaii as a factor for the cancellation.
