CBS has canceled the Hawaii-based “Magnum P.I.” crime drama after four seasons.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, it is the highest rated series canceled this season. The show, starring Jay Hernandez, averaged about 7.4 million viewers in its Friday time period.
A reboot of the 1980s drama starring Tom Selleck, “Magnum” was also a big hit overseas.
CBS Studios produced the program in association with Universal Television, and talks between the two studios broke down over the show’s license fee, according to Deadline.
Hernandez had said in interviews he was confident the show would be picked up.
“We got one more season, he told Access Daily. “Fifth season coming up, right? It hasn’t been announced, but it’s going to happen, right? I’m not worried about it.”
The show wrapped up the series on May 6, with Hernandez and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) sharing a kiss.
CBS produces another crime drama on Oahu, “NCIS: Hawai’i,” which was renewed for a second season.
