Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but the Kauai War Memorial Conventional Hall will remain open. High demand for COVID-19 testing has prompted city officials in Lihue to keep the testing site open on the federal holiday.

“Mahalo to all the staff and volunteers who are working tirelessly at the Convention Hall to help keep our community safe,” said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami in a news release. “We thank you and all our frontline health workers from the bottom of our hearts for your continued efforts.”

The site will be open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and use a ticketing system to prevent extended lines and crowds.

Tickets are distributed starting at 8 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis and include a time to return for an appointment later that day. Due to demand, tickets are usually snapped up by 9 a.m.

The entire state has seen a surge in COVID cases due to the omicron variant. On Sunday, Kauai reported 230 cases, according to the Hawaii Department of Health.

The Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall offers free rapid PCR COVID-19 testing with same-day results. Individuals with COVID symptoms are asked to go to a drive-thru or clinical site, not the Kauai War Memorial testing location.

A photo ID is required for adults. A parent or guardian must accompany children.
