The Hawaii Department of Health has identified a new COVID-19 cluster linked to a live concert on Molokai.

The concert was held on Dec. 18 at Paddlers Restaurant and Bar in Kaunakakai.

A coronavirus cluster refers to multiple cases — at least three or more — occurring at one event at a single location or among people with shared exposures.

On Dec. 30, the Department of Health reported Molokai had 21 new COVID-19 cases, a high number for a community that has reported relatively few cases throughout the pandemic.

More than 70% of Molokai residents who are ages 5 and older have received the initial series of vaccinations, according to the Department of Health’s data.

“Given the growing number of cases on Molokai, I urge residents to take proper precautions against COVID-19,” said Sen. Lynn DeCoite, who represents East and Upcountry Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe, in a press release. “Please continue to social distance, avoid large gatherings, wash your hands, and wear a mask when with people outside of your immediate household. If you are not yet vaccinated or boosted, please do so as soon as possible.”

“I ask my constituents across District 7 to please continue to be vigilant as we move into the new year,” DeCoite added. “If you are feeling sick or think you’ve been exposed, please get tested. It is on all of us to stop the spread and protect our communities.”

DeCoite also shared on her Facebook page where to get a COVID-19 test on Molokai, which included Lanikeha Community Center, Molokai Community Health Center, Molokai General Hospital, and Molokai Drugs.
