Maui Mayor Michael Victorino is urging residents to prepare for the omicron variant, saying he has been monitoring the state’s recent surge in COVID-19 cases.
“Although Maui County has the state’s lowest positivity rate at 1.9% over the past 7 days, it’s just a matter of time before omicron makes its way here,” Victorino said.
On Sunday, the Hawaii Department of Health reported 972 cases of COVID-19, as well as two deaths. While Oahu reported the majority of the cases at 877, the second-highest total was reported on Maui, with 38.
Hawaii Health Director Dr. Libby Char on Friday said the state has confirmed 31 cases of the highly contagious omicron variant — all on the island of Oahu.
Victorino said despite the increase in cases, he had no plans for additional restrictions.
“That will change if our medical facilities are being taxed,” he said.
Still, the mayor urged residents to take precautions.
“I want everyone to enjoy a happy, healthy holiday season so please continue masking up indoors, keep your distance from others, avoid gatherings among different households and wash your hands frequently,” he said. “Most importantly, please get vaccinated. If you received one dose of Moderna or Pfizer, get the second one. If it’s been six months since your second dose, get your booster right away.”
