The County of Kauai Department of Motor Vehicles will close at 3 p.m. every other week until further notice to accommodate staff trainings for an upcoming DMV integration project. The 3 p.m. closing begins this week. The last customer during 3 p.m. closings will be seen at 2:48 p.m.

The DMV integration project will combine the Drivers Licensing and Motor Vehicle Registration divisions into one full-service DMV.

“We are excited to begin the transition of fully integrating our DMV into one functional department where all service windows will be able to accommodate every type of transation,” said Mayor Derek Kawakami, in a news release. “As we prepare for this endeavor, we thank our DMV staff for their extraordinary efforts in helping us better serve our community together.”

After the project is completed, customers will experience more available service appointments, reduced onsite wait times, reduced processing times on transactions while at the DMV service window, and improved technical expertise and customer service.

Customers are highly encouraged to make an appointment, especially during training weeks. Visit the DMV website to make an appointment or for additional information. Walk-in tickets will be serviced as time permits. A training schedule will be available on the DMV website this week.

The DMV is open Monday through Friday, except on state and federal holidays. Kupuna hour is 8-8:45 a.m. daily for customers 65 and older; no appointments are necessary.

The DMV project training is expected to continue through the summer of 2022.
