MAALAEA, Hawaii — The 11th annual Maui 5K Run and Walk sponsored by Maui Ocean Center is set to start at 7 a.m. on March 6 at Maui Ocean Center with all proceeds benefiting Maui Nui schools.
As title sponsor for the Maui 5K Run and Walk for the third consecutive year, Maui Ocean Center has been a huge support to the event.
“Maui 5K is unique because it’s the only event that supports all Maui Nui schools — public and private," said Tapani Vuori, Maui Ocean Center general manager. “With the funds raised from Sunday’s event, our schools will be able to provide more options for keiki to be physically active, which is something we’re proud to support.”
Funds raised go directly to support county-wide schools in expanding physical education, fitness and athletic programs. The event is also an opportunity to reconnect with the community and encourage the public to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Participants can either enter the timed 5K run/walk or all ages are welcome to sign up for the untimed one-mile walk. There’s also a virtual 5K and one-mile walk for those unable to attend in person.
The annual event is the brainchild of Arlene and Jon Emerson, passionate runners behind the 501(c)(3) organization Run For Fitness. Their desire to help youths live happier, more active and healthy lifestyles, as well as give back to the community, filled the gap when Oahu’s Nike 5K for Kids run ended in 2009. The couple launched the Honolulu 5K in 2010 to keep the ball rolling to help fund local schools.
In 2012, the pair moved over to Maui, and since Maui 5K’s inaugural event in 2012, the event has raised $95,604 for Maui Nui schools. Each year, 45-50 schools participate in the fundraising. To date, the event has surpassed its 2022 registration goal of 500 by 91, as well as its fundraising goal of $25,000 and reached more than $30,000.
Online registration is closed, however, sign up will be available on race day from 6 a.m.
Event details and registration are available at the Maui Ocean Center website.
