HONOLULU — The rush for Christmas trees shipped in from Oregon and Washington is on, and many have already been sold, but trees are still available at various locations.
The nonprofit Habilitat has trees available at Stadium Mall near Ice Palace, Central Union Church, Safeway in Kaneohe, in Kapolei at the former Kmart site and Koko Marina Center. All sites are open noon-9 p.m.
All proceeds from tree sales go back into the program that’s helped thousands of people overcome substance abuse and homelessness.
Christmas in Hawaii at Ala Moana Center was started by Richard Tajiri and two friends. The company’s first shipment was in 1976 and was sold mainly for wholesale to florists and customers who pre-ordered trees. The business has continued in the family after Tajiri died last year. Trees are still available onsite.
Christmas trees are also available at Home Depot stores in Honolulu, Pearl City and Kapolei; and Lowe’s Waipahu location. City Mill has trees available at their Hawaii Kai, Nimitz, Kaneohe and Pearl City locations, though supplies are limited. All Walmart locations, except for the Fort Street Mall store, have trees available.
Koolau Farmers received a shipment of 25-30 trees earlier today and expect to be sold out by late Friday.
Helemano Farms, the only tree farm located in central Oahu, has trees available, but according to owner Aaron O’Brien, many have been sold after opening for sales on Nov. 20.
“They’re almost gone, 2,500 trees,” he said. O’Brien said the Cypress trees had been sold. “If people are looking for four- to five-feet, we got a lot, but the taller trees are very minimal,” he said. “The Yoshinos, we have up to 12 feet; we have a lot and they’re only pre-cut. The Norfolks we’re low.” For the remaining Norfolk, he said people can pick their tree, and they’ll cut it.
O’Brien said they also raised prices this year. “We had to, this year. Prices are a little higher, about 12 to 15%.”
Helemano Farms is open from noon till dark Wednesday-Friday and 10 a.m. till dark on the weekends.
