Ever dreamed of having a career in law enforcement? The Big Island is currently hiring entry-level police officers in all of its communities, ending its recruitment period on March 1, according to the Hawaii Police Department’s press release.

As a part of its recurring community outreach program, the department hosts a popular “Coffee with a Cop” series, with its next one occurring on Monday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Waimea Starbucks in the Parker Ranch Center (67-1185 Māmalahoa Highway).

Locals can ask the officers questions and quench curiosities about what a career in local enforcement may really be like and what the daily issues and obstacles are.

If you can’t make it on Feb. 28, check Hawaiipolice.com or its Twitter profile for updates on the next “Coffee with a Cop” event, as they take place a handful of times per month in the Kailua-Kona and Waimea areas.

The starting salary for a police officer is $65,652, according to the Hawaii Police Department, and includes various benefits. Qualifications include a GED or equivalent, health and physical condition standards set by the County of Hawaii, a valid driver’s license and a starting age of at least 20 years old. Applicants should not have any misdemeanor or felony or domestic violence convictions, among others listed in detail here.
