An evacuation order was lifted Wednesday for two subdivisions in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island after a brush fire was contained.
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said Wednesday at 4:34 p.m. that the brush fire was under control.
Both Kona Hillcrest Subdivision and Aloha Kona Subdivision were ordered to be evacuated on Wednesday at 12:45 p.m., according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency.
Fire and police officers went door-to-door to get residents out safely, according to Cyrus Johnasen, the communications director for Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth.
A shelter was set-up at Kailua Park (Old Kona Airport) Gymnasium for anyone evacuating.
Two roads were also closed due to the brush fire, including Kuakini Highway from Oni Oni Street to Nakukui Drive and Queen Kaahumanu Highway from Hualalai Road to Puapuanui Street.
