SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has announced who will step into the role of Deputy Chief of Detention.
Effective April 7, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office will promote Captain Ruben Vela to the position. Vela will serve as the Deputy Chief of Adult Detention Administration and Operations Division.

According to the sheriff’s office, he is a 34-year veteran with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and has worked in various sections throughout the Adult Detention Center, at all ranks, through his previous rank of Captain.
Vela will oversee all sections of the Adult Detention Center to include the Main Jail, Jail Annex, Jail Support Services, Detention Special Operations, and Detention Auxiliary Operations.
The news comes amid controversy surrounding a failed inspection of the Adult Dention Center, two attempted escapes in the past two months, and Deputy Chief Laura Balditt’s retirement announcement Thursday.
