SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office reported an Adult Detention Center escape attempt by two inmates that was thwarted on Thursday morning.

The jail is located at 200 N. Comal Street, just west of Interstate 35 and north of Historic Market Square.

The inmates have been identified as Ramon Medellin Jr. and Martin Eddie Herrera.

The office reported that just after 8 a.m., the newly created Contraband Abatement Team located a breakage in the outer structure of the jail. The office stressed that there was no escape and no threat to the public.

The jail and surrounding streets were placed on lockdown until further notice as a precaution, however.

This is the second attempted breakout in a little over two months. The first happened on March 2 when inmates Luis Arroyo, Eric Trevino and Jacob Brownson escaped by cutting through mesh 20 feet from the ground, using bedsheets to shimmy down into the jail's recreation area.

On Thursday afternoon, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office reported that Deputy Chief Laura Balditt, assistant jail administrator, has tendered her intent to retire from the office. Sheriff Javier Salazar accepted the notice of retirement, and Balditt will step down after 31 years of service.

The office reported an announcement concerning a new appointment for the assistant jail administrator will be made no later than Friday.
