SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Adult Detention center failed to meet the Texas minimum jail standards during its latest inspection.

On April 4, the jail received a notice of non-compliance from The Texas Commission on Jail Standards. This inspection was a follow-up to the recent escape of three inmates in March.

According a jail inspection report, regular and irregular searches for contraband were not conducted between April and August of 2017 in the unit where the three inmates escaped. The report also determined there were too many inmates using the permitted exercise area at one time.

After receiving the notice, BCSO implemented policies and practices for personnel to ensure 100 percent compliance on contraband searches throughout the jail.

“Having passed our two latest annual inspections, being in compliance is our number one priority,” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said. “Since the escape, we had undertaken an exhaustive top to bottom inspection of our facility, as well as implementing new security protocols. We look forward to presenting our findings to TCJS as soon as possible, and working with them to regain our compliance status without delay”

Going forward all inmate units have been reassessed and individual placards have been created for them detailing specific rules per unit regarding inmate standards. The jail will put up placards that show how many inmates are allowed in the exercise area.
