PENFIELD, N.Y. -- A bill addressing more local control of sex offenders will finally see debate in the State Assembly.

Legislators gathered at the Town Hall in Penfield on Monday to share the bill.

It's passed in the Senate each year since 2015, but now has sponsorship from State Assemblyman Mark Johns.

If it succeeds, it would allow municipalities to ease or strengthen restrictions on sex offenders in the community.

Sen. Rich Funke says these towns have a right to choose how to govern themselves.

"No two communities are the same. No two children are the same. To have one New York State law, overarching law affecting sex offenders in the state is probably not the right way to go. It probably should be up to your local community to make their own decisions on this," said Funke, (R.)

The bill will now be looked at in the Assembly.

They have until the session ends in late June.
