Keith Mitchell’s gotten to see a different side of Josh Allen since they first were paired together at the Pebble Beach Pro Am two years ago.
“Obviously I knew who he was. I’m a big football fan,” said Mitchell. “He’s just a fun, down to earth guy to hang out with. I didn’t know that about him until we got to play, so it’s been fun getting to spend time with him.”
Fun, but at times, costly.
“He’s pretty good at practical jokes,” said Mitchell. “He’s won a couple hundred dollars off me on card tricks that I didn’t believe he could do it and he did it.”
Mitchell and Allen’s golf relationship has grown too, including a fourth-place finish at this year’s Pebble Pro Am.
“He’s getting better at golf, but he’s probably going to get a lot better at football coming up here because football season’s around the corner and he’s been grinding, working out and everything,” said Mitchell. “I usually catch him right after football season and his golf’s terrible. Now his golf’s probably great and then football’s going to take back over.”
Allen’s been very open about his rooting interest for Mitchell this week here at the PGA Championship, even hoping Bills Mafia adopts him at Oak Hill the way they have their quarterback. But simply Allen’s presence has a history of elevating Mitchell’s game.
“I’ve played well with him at Pebble Beach the two times we’ve played,” said Mitchell. “Then he came out to L.A. and I played well there too, so I think he’s got a good track record of showing up. Maybe if my caddie gets hurt or something he might be on the bag on the weekend.”
