There’s a bit of a hometown advantage for one of the biggest names playing in this week’s PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club.
Rory McIlroy, the third-ranked golfer in the world, married into Rochester.
“I’ve only had one garbage plate in my life,” he said. “I haven’t went overboard with that.”
He’s also had everything that comes with a wife from Irondequoit.
“[It] certainly makes it easier to root for the Bills when Josh Allen is throwing the football,” McIlroy said.
Which is what makes this week at Oak Hill Country Club a major championship with somewhat of a hometown feel for McIlroy.
“I’ve spent summers here,” he said. “I’ve spent falls here. I’ve spent a few Christmas’ here. I love the seasons. We live in Florida. We don’t get that, so it’s nice to come up here and see the leaves change in October and have the snow at Christmas time. There’s parts of it that I’ve really enjoyed and will continue to enjoy.”
As McIlroy’s wife Erica focuses on bringing that family feel to the course with loads of tickets, Rory’s focused on trying to win his third PGA Championship. And even though he’s spent more time around Rochester than his competitors, it’s more even when it comes to time spent here at Oak Hill.”
“It’s not as if I have a ton of local knowledge here compared to everyone else,” McIlroy said. “The last two days are really the most I’ve seen of this golf course over the last couple of years. So I wouldn’t say it’s a hometown event, but hopefully going to get some more support than most of the others in the field, which is nice.”
Josh Allen will likely be on hand to see McIlroy’s game in action.
