This week is Fire Prevention Week, and fire departments have an important message this year. They're putting the word out about ensuring you have working smoke alarms.

Unfortunately, many homes don't have them, and it can be the difference between survival and not making it out of a fire.

About half of all fire deaths occur during the hours of 11 p.m. through 7 a.m. People wake up to fire and smoke rather than the beep of a smoke alarm, and by then, it's often too late for a safe escape.

Dave Morales of the Getzville Fire Company talks about a simple life-saving effort.
