The race between Democratic Onondaga County Legislator Chris Ryan and Republican Salina Town Supervisor Nick Paro to fill the open seat in New York’s 50th state Senate District remains too close to call as of early Wednesday morning.
According to the latest unofficial results from the state Board of Elections, Ryan was leading Paro 49% to 48%, separated by just 548 votes.
Ryan served on the Geddes Town Board before being elected to the Onondaga County Legislature in 2011. He currently serves as minority leader in that chamber. Paro has worked as a legislative aide and analyst for the Onondaga County Legislature before being elected to the Salina Town Board. He has been the Salina town supervisor since 2021.
Whoever comes out ahead could be decisive in whether Democrats maintain their supermajority in the state Legislature’s upper chamber in Albany.
Held by John Mannion since 2021, Mannion vacated the seat this year to run for Congress. The district was long held by Republican John DeFrancisco before his retirement in 2018.
It has been one of the few competitive districts in the state Senate over the last few cycles, with Mannion winning in 2022 by just 10 votes.
The 50th state Senate District includes Syracuse’s northern, western and eastern suburbs, as well as Central Square and the cities of Fulton and Oswego.
