For the last 123 years (minus a two-year hiatus during the pandemic), New York statehouse reporters who cover the governor and Legislature in Albany have produced an annual gridiron show in the manner of the White House Correspondents Dinner, but without Hollywood celebrities.

The event is called the Legislative Correspondents Association Show, or LCA Show, for short.

This year’s festivities take place Tuesday evening at 60 State Place in Albany and will feature all your favorite “Capital Tonighters” including reporter Kate Lisa and politics producer Mary Francis Stoute, who can both sing, as well as Capital Tonight planning editor Tim Williams, for whom the jury is still out.

Gov. Kathy Hochul will be there to present her humorous take on the legislative session, as will most of the legislative leaders. The Republican rebuttal this year will be presented by State Sen. Joe Griffo (R-Rome).

When asked why he would volunteer to entertain what can be a jaded crowd, he said, “you asked me a couple of times and I refused. This year you made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

But the veteran legislator wouldn’t provide Capital Tonight with a preview of his performance, saying only, “I’ve done karaoke. It’s never been a crowd pleaser, but we’ll see how it works with the LCA."

As for jokes?

“I’d give you a preview but I’m in solidarity with the Writers [Guild] right now, so I have no material," he said.

This year’s LCA show is titled “Everything’s Coming Up Kathy." It will feature the reporters who cover the Hochul administration, as well as Gov. Hochul and Griffo.

Appetizers will be served at 7 p.m. The show starts at 8 p.m. and rebuttals will be at 9 p.m.
