ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Holiday decorators across the region are transforming their homes into dazzling winter wonderlands, outshining last year’s efforts with towering inflatables and synchronized light displays.
This year, the race to go bigger and brighter is lighting up neighborhoods like never before.
Retailer Lowe’s reports that 61% of Americans are embracing the “bigger is better” trend for Christmas decor, opting for bold and oversized decorations. But what are they buying - or planning to buy?
Oversized inflatables and giant nutcrackers are making bold statements, but traditional styles are still holding strong. Pre-lit LED trees, garlands, and nostalgic bows remain timeless favorites, blending classic charm with a modern touch.
“The hottest trend is bigger is better. So at Lowe's, we’ve got giant decor. Everything from giant snowmen and Bluetooth nutcrackers that can go on your front porch or in your house to giant Santa Clauses that are inflatable. And our favorite is a giant Bumble. It’s a ten foot tall, animatronic Bumble, which is a nostalgic throwback from the movie "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." So bigger is absolutely better this year," said Monica Reese, director of trend and style at Lowe’s.
Beyond size, other holiday decor trends are emerging. Earthy tones like natural greens and reds reminiscent of mistletoe are making a comeback, alongside cheerful cherry hues. There’s also a rise in “intentional clutter,” with displays of family photos and quirky objects adding personal charm to the season.
Whether embracing bold inflatables or traditional garlands, decorators are making the holidays their own, with every choice helping to brighten the season.
