In addition to providing manpower to fight the ongoing wildfires, one New York State fire department is providing a different kind of relief.

The Cobleskill Fire Department, based in the Capital Region, has been collecting donations of things like grab and go snack packs, wipes and hand warmer packs.

Several crews have been battling the fire since last weekend.

If you want to support any of the wildfire recovery efforts, the state attorney general's office is reminding people to make sure you are careful if you donate.

Attorney General Letitia James is reminding people to check before giving to any organization to make sure it's legit.

Ask how your donation will be used and, if you are asked to donate through email, see who is behind the email address. And if you get a text message asking for a donation, check the charity’s website or call them to confirm it has authorized contributions can be made via text.

“As we witness the devastating impact of wildfires in New York and our neighboring states, it is inspiring to see so many New Yorkers eager to help,” said AG James. “I encourage New Yorkers to support verified charities and encourage them to remain vigilant against organizations that prey on people’s generosity for personal gain. Our office will continue to do all we can to protect your contributions and assist anyone who encounters predatory practices. I encourage New Yorkers who experience any issues when donating to contact my office.”
