ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — He’s played at the sport’s highest level, but there’s one thing Austin Johnson had never done at any level — in high school, college, or the pros.
The Buffalo Bills defensive tackle recorded the first interception of his life in a win over the Seattle Seahawks last month.
“Right place, right time,” Johnson said after practice this week as the Bills prepared to host the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs at Highmark Stadium. “The people on the field kind of made it happen for me.”
However, the nine-year NFL veteran wasn’t finished. Two weeks later, Johnson did it again, picking off a screen pass against the Indianapolis Colts.
“The quarterback was getting hit in Indy and he threw it and I was right there,” he said. “Just got to catch it.”
That’s easier said than done. Johnson became just third defensive lineman in Bills history with two or more interceptions in the same season.
“It’s a cool feeling. I never had an interception before,” he said. “(My) kids when I came back home are just like, ‘Daddy, how do you spell interception?’ So it’s a pretty cool feeling.”
Johnson joined the Bills last offseason, recruited by friend and former college (Penn State) and professional (Tennessee Titans) teammate, fellow Bills d-tackle DaQuan Jones.
For Johnson, the Buffalo defense seemed like a perfect fit for his style and personality.
“Aggressive, relentless. Just going to be a rock ‘em, sock ‘em day and that’s what I’m hoping for,” he said.
For Johnson and his family, Buffalo’s been a favorite stop along his NFL journey. A father of three, he’s not the only one in the house who knows football.
His wife, Danika, had a professional career in the former Legends Football League as a player, coach and general manager.
“She watches film with me from time to time,” Johnson said. “She asks me like, ‘What coverage are you guys in here. Isn’t so and so supposed to here?’ And she’s done that for years.”
His wife was champion as a player. Now, it’s Johnson chasing a Super Bowl championship — a major reason why he landed in Buffalo.
And it wouldn’t be the first time he accomplished a brand new feat this season.
“It’s my ninth year and I definitely want to be a contender, so it’s priority,” he said.
