ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The new state park being developed at Rochester’s High Falls got another round of community design input. The plan is to create a 40-acre state park focused along the Genesee River gorge at High Falls.
Now that the State Parks department and Empire State Development officially selected design firm OLIN, project leaders listened to more public feedback during an open house Wednesday. Brownfield cleanup continues at the site. The plan is to make the space the centerpiece for downtown to celebrate the beauty of the falls.
“The goal is to make sure we are serving the local communities in Rochester. You don’t get a lot of greenspaces where people can recreate. At the same time, we want to be able to draw people in to come see this special place they otherwise wouldn’t have a reason to come to,” said Arthur Briley, regional director for New York State Parks.
New York has committed $8 million for the park design. Phase one of the park is expected to open sometime in 2028. Some of the design elements include multi-use trails, overlooks, pavilions, an amphitheater, play areas, accessible shorelines, parking and roadways.
"We are making tremendous strides towards revitalizing our waterfront and creating a unique destination that will strengthen our region and more importantly will fuel our economic growth,” said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans.
