Rep. Paul Tonko handily won reelection to Congress on Tuesday, beating Albany Law School student Kevin Waltz in New York's 20th Congressional District, the Associated Press declared.
The Democrat, who maintains a robust presence in the Capital Region district and has been strong ally of the Biden administration, led Waltz 68% to 32% with more than a third of the expected vote in, according to the latest unofficial results from AP.
Tonko has represented the 20th Congressional District – most of the Capital Region – since 2009.
In terms of intensity, this year's 20th District race took a backseat to other congressional races in New York.
Tonko campaigned on delivering for the area, and during a recent visit to the area, touted his support for the federal infrastructure law passed under Biden, saying it's brought more than $500 million to the area.
He also highlighted his commitment to protecting reproductive rights, addressing climate change and promoting social, racial and economic justice.
Waltz said he became a candidate to bring a different perspective into the race, prioritizing public safety and securing U.S. borders.
The 20th Congressional District is made up of Albany County and parts of Saratoga, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties, and includes the cities of Albany, Troy, Rensselaer, Saratoga Springs and Amsterdam.
Tonko will be sworn in in January as a member of the 119th Congress.
