Sunday marks the start of Teen Driver Safety Week.

According to AAA, new teen drivers, ages 16 to 17, are three times more likely than an adult to get into a deadly crash, with motor vehicle crashes the leading cause of death for teens ages 15-18 in the United States. Officials say there were 2,514 people killed in crashes involving a teen passenger vehicle driver ages 15-18 in 2022, with 811 of those deaths resulting from a teen passenger vehicle driver.

AAA says this week is meant to raise awareness about these facts and urge parents to talk with their teens about being safe drivers.

AAA is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of their driver training course, which helps teens and drivers everywhere learn to be more cautious behind the wheel.

“The virtual 5-hour course at AAA coupled with hands-on, in-car experience with a skilled instructor through a variety of routes and in different weather conditions prepares young drivers for safety and success behind the wheel,” Mike Formanowicz, AAA driver training manager, said in a statement."

More information on the course can be found on AAA's website.
