Monroe County's Board of Elections is making some changes for the upcoming primary after experiencing some delays in results in the previous general election.

Election Night November 2022 left candidates and supporters anxiously awaiting the results for hours after polls closed because of a delay in the publishing of returns in Monroe County.

Now, following an investigation, the Board of Elections has learned more about what went wrong.

“I think that perhaps the volume was something that perhaps was something that wasn’t taken fully into consideration," said Democratic Monroe County Board of Elections Commissioner Jackie Ortiz.

The results of the investigation released earlier this week summarize what happened and how it was investigated, but do not 100% pinpoint the problem.

“In the particular conditions that we had at the time, I think it was something that was at least partially responsible for the delay," said Ortiz.

The team moved to its secondary location and published the data, stating no results were affected. But they’re making changes to avoid any potential repeats of the election night events.

“We already made an upgrade if you will, to size of memory and capacity in regard to server and things of that nature," said Ortiz.

That secondary location will be utilized for data collection on elections moving forward, including June’s primary. The BOE sent out its annual verification cards. They list party affiliations, early voting dates and locations, and more important information.

"They just hit mailboxes a couple of days ago and will continue to do so over the next couple of days since we’re having to send to almost a half a million registered voters in the county," said Ortiz.

Early voting starts on June 17 and the primary is being held on June 27.
