Conesus Lake is where the first bloom of blue-green algae has been reported.
The Livingston County Health Department says the bloom was found at the north end near Vitale Park.
“Harmful algal blooms (Blue Green Algae) have recently been found at the north shoreline (Vitale Park and surrounding area) of Conesus Lake,” the health department said in a press release. “The Livingston County Department of Health is monitoring for algae blooms and may collect samples of the water if the bloom is concentrated and persistent.”
If you come in contact with the blue-green algae, you are urged to wash with soap and water as soon as possible. Blue-green algae can create toxins that are harmful if ingested by people or pets.
“You are advised not to drink or use the lake water for cooking and do not swim, wade, play, or come into direct contact with water that is discolored or has scums on the surface,” the health department continued. “Pets should not be allowed to drink or to come into contact with discolored water. If contact occurs, wash with soap and clean water to remove algal material.”
