IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — With nearly all pandemic related restrictions lifted, life is turning back to normal. This inspired Bach to Rock Penfield music school to get their students in front of a live crowd for an outdoor music festival.
The Samurais of Sound were one of many bands with young performers that took the stage at I-Square in Irondequoit.
Caden Whalen, 10, of Penfield is the band's lead singer. He said it was his first performance in almost two years because of the pandemic.
"At first, it's a lot of adrenaline,” Whalen said. “But once you just get into it, it's basically like you singing by yourself."
Nick Valente, owner of Bach to Rock Penfield says it was a difficult year, but they were able to get more than 50 of their students on stage Saturday.
"On March 22, 2020, we went to a 100% virtual lessons,” Valente said. “We have done 6,000 virtual lessons, but as of this year we are back to 85% on site."
He added the main goal is to help their young musicians build confidence and teach them collaboration and teamwork.
"We’re so excited that we can get out on a stage, nice grassy area, socially distant and get our student out performing” Valente said. “They have been working so hard over the last few years, and specifically the last year and a half, so they are so excited to show you all of their hard work."
Whalen, who also DJs, and has played the piano, ukulele and guitar, is just happy to perform live shows again.
"It's just nice to get out,” Whalen said. “I have always been into music. I've been musical instruments for three years. Yeah, it's just nice to get out here and perform for people."
The next Bach to Rock Student Showcase will be July 31.
