The new autism service center in Gates is officially open.

The Autism Council Information and Referral Center held a ribbon cutting Thursday.

The center will provide training and resources to autism families and the community.

It is the first facility of its kind in Gates.

“Hopefully now people will understand that we were are just one in the same, we were just born different,” said Dalton Letta of Gates.

The resource center has been dedicated to Trevyan Rowe.

Rowe was a 14-year-old student who walked away from School 12 in March and was found days later in the Genesee River.

Rowe's family was emotional during the ceremony and gave thanks to the community for keeping Rowe’s memory alive.

“It’s things like this that helps us get through and to know that all of this is in place, said Trevyan Rowe’s Uncle, Kent Handy. “To know that somebody really cares and maybe some other families can be spared the grief.”

The Autism Council Information and Referral Center will be open Monday through Thursdays from 12-6 p.m. It is located at 2118 Chili Ave.

“The parents of autistic kids I know they are seeing a difference now. My kids matters. He or she matters and that makes it all better,” said Antonia Wynter, whose son is on the autism spectrum.
