ONTARIO, N.Y. — Residents of the town of Ontario are under a boil water advisory for the next few days due to possible contaminants that may have seeped in early Sunday morning.
At approximately 3 a.m. a water main break caused a leak near the entrance of the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant along Lake Road. The New York State Department of Health was contacted and required the town of Ontario to boil their water before using it in case of contamination.
The water main break has since been repaired.
“All the residents within the town are in a water boil advisory. I do want to make sure that’s clear, it’s only the town of Ontario. Even though we supply to other places, none of those we believe are impacted,” said Adam Cummings, Town of Ontario superintendent of water utilities.
For the water to be considered safe to use for cooking and drinking, it must be boiled for at least a minute.
“Showers are fine, washing dishes you can do as well. The disinfectant of the soaps will take care of it. If you want to err to caution on the dishes, use bottled water or boiling water,” added Cummings.
Residents said they aren’t too concerned, but wanted to take the safe approach stocking up on water to make sure their family members and pets are safe.
“Stock up on some water, so we make sure that the pets as well as us have fresh water to use, coffee pot, dogs water bowl, anything like that,” said Tammy O’Neil, resident.
“We’re big water drinkers, so I’ll probably get a little extra today just to be on the safe side, especially with grandkids,” said Lisa Trimboli, resident.
Cummings says they haven’t seen any signs that the water is contaminated, but they need to err on the side of caution and presume that it is.
“When an outside source lets it infiltrate into the system because it’s going through soil and sediment you could have bacteria from a whole slew of wastes that are in the ground, the coliforms, fecal, e-coli. We haven’t seen any of those, but we presume that it could be a possibility,” he added.
Cummings says something like this has never happened and it’s the first ever town-wide boil water advisory. If there are no indications of contaminants in the water on the lab tests after two days, they will lift the advisory.
