Representatives from the Willow Domestic Violence Center have been sitting in court to offer support to the family of Syreeta Knight during Elwell McPhail's trial, who is accused of murdering her.

According to court paperwork, officers found Knight's body in December with a note saying she was killed because of "disrepectful comments and infidelity."

McPhail, 49, allegedly beat Knight with a blunt object.

A friend and former worker at Willow says Knight was a mother of two children and used Willow services in the past to find safe housing.

Willow officials told Spectrum News it's not the first time they've sat in on a trial and want to bring awareness to the issue.

They say each day, three women in the U.S. are killed by their partner.

"We had 50,000 911 calls that were classified as domestic disputes last year in Monroe County. It happens all around us, domestic violence has no boundaries. It's in every zip code, it's everywhere in Monroe County and we need to take a stand against it," said Meaghan de Chateauvieux, who works at the Willow Domestic Violence Center.

The trial is expected to continue next week.
