GREECE, N.Y. — Science teacher Kyra Stephenson knows that hands-on classwork gets kids involved. That's why, for the first time, her seventh grade life science students will be gardening in class.

The students are building tower gardens. It's a vertical growing system that uses aeroponics — the process of growing plants in a mist environment instead of soil. They'll be planting, tending and harvesting in less than three square feet.

Some of the kids have never planted anything, but are eager to give it a shot and even taste some of the greens.

Lowes provided a $4,000 grant for the mobile tower gardens.

The class plans to have a "Salad Party" for their parents in May.
