The Town of Greece’s Public Library gave Monroe County Residents a reason to visit aside from just checking out a book.
On Thursday, local officials celebrated the newest addition to the media center. It’s a cubicle, filled with technology they are calling the "Creation Station." To the residents of Greece, this is just another step in bringing their local library into the modern age.
"We solicited about 1,200 residents to see what they wanted from the Library,” said Cassie Guthrie, director of the Greece Library. “This concept of lifelong learning, in all ways came up very high on the list."
This lifelong learning philosophy means taking advantage of the latest technology, including a button maker, “Cricut” machines; used for designing and cutting fabrics, and even an Ultimaker 2+ 3D printer. They're also offering orientation classes on how to design and use the machines.
"3D Printing is really easy to learn,” said Betsy Dobles, a 3D printing instructor. “All of the heavy lifting is done in the computer aided design software, and we even make that easy for people. We teach teens, adults, we even teach kids as young and ten and adults as old as 70."
The possibilities for things that can be made are almost endless, according to instructors for the library.
"I printed off a replacement for the knob on my dryer,” Dobles added. “So I didn't have to send away to the manufacturer. We use cable management devices here that we designed on the computer, we even have people coming here to design things like Christmas ornaments."
The class on 3D printing is completely free, and open to anyone from Monroe County with a Greece public library card. As for the “Cricut” machine, the library plans to have orientation classes for its use this coming April.
