ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Police say 36-year-old Melvin White, of Rochester, was shot early Monday morning on Central Avenue.

White was found with at least one gunshot wound in the upper body. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Strong Memorial Hospital.

The father of four was known for his love of cars, which he bought and sold for a living.

His daughter, 18-year-old Rahnasia White, was notified through a phone call around 2 a.m. Monday. She says he was a devoted father.

"We had a camping trip, at the Camp of America. It was really fun," said Rahnasia White. “I never went camping before. Ever. And I was so happy to be there with him, you know? Like in the woods, telling stories and all that. It was amazing."

But for Rahnasia and her siblings, the pain of losing a parent is made worse knowing that whoever is responsible could still be out there. Police have not yet given any updates on what happened, and so far, have not identified any suspects.

It's left Melvin's family with one question: Why?

"What possesses people to do stuff like that?” Rahnasia added. “Like how can you do that to someone? How can you wake up, how can you eat, knowing what you just did to somebody?”
