ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Families in Webster and Rochester are grieving following a violent Friday morning in Rochester. Rochester police say a 27-year-old was shot and killed on Lyceum Street around 1 a.m.

The last time Ryan Laduca saw his best friend, Nicholas Welsher, was minutes after Welsher was shot around the corner from his house.

"As soon as it happened... Nicky was already laying the street and he was already shot, it was just probably one of the worst things I've ever seen in my life," said Laduca.

Laduca says he held Welsher's hand. His mother covered the gun shot wound with her shirt. Welsher later died at the hospital. He was a graduate of Webster Thomas High School.

"He's got a daughter. He is a great kid. It's just horrible, I cannot believe somebody would do something like that," said Laduca.

Laduca says Welsher had just left his house and was walking to his car with his older brother when someone tried to rob them at gunpoint. Laduca's brother got away. The suspect shot Welsher and fled the scene.

Rochester police are not releasing details about the investigation.

Welsher's family wanted to see where their son was killed and wanted to know everything that happened before he died. Laduca told the family he has no idea what would motivate someone to do something so violent.

"From here on out, we will take it a day at a time. Obviously the police are doing as much as they can. It is just horrible," said Laduca.
