ROCHESTER, N.Y -- People of all ages are invited to get in the pool at the YMCAs of Greater Rochester.

The Y is offering free, basic swimming lessons for a week in April.

Thousands of people are expected to take part. Staff and more than a hundred volunteers at the area Ys will help people learn how to swim just in time for the upcoming summertime.

"One in five kids experience drowning situations between the ages of one to 14," said Anne Hossenlop of Bay View Family YMCA. "We'll be teaching vital safety and swim skills and how they could rescue themselves were they to get themselves in a dangerous situation."

The swim lessons take place from March 28 through April 1. Registration is required for splash week. You can enroll online or at your local YMCA.
