HENRIETTA, N.Y. -- After weeks in the hospital and rehab, little NyKira Hall is home with her aunt, Denita Baker, who is caring for her.

Nykira was 14-months-old when she suffered a severe brain injury in an alleged case of child abuse. Her father, Nikey Hall, has been charged one count of first degree assault and two counts of second degree assault in the case.

Police said Nyrika was 14-months-old when she was injured at a house on Chili Avenue. Investigators have not said exactly how Nykira was injured, only that she suffered a severe brain injury.

"She's not the same baby she was before," Baker said.

Nykira was just learning how to talk and walk before this all happened. Today, she can't walk, has limited movement on the right side of her body and is likely blind, but Denita said Nykira can definitely hear and follows her voice. She's also making plenty of sounds.

"I'm willing to take care of her any way she is because I love her, but it's heartbreaking that she won't call me mommy again."

Baker is filled with faith, compassion and most of all, love for the niece she calls her daughter.

"I love her like she's my own.  I told her, I'm going to take care of her until I can't take care of her anymore."

Baker had to quit her job, to bring Nykira home and take care of her full-time. She has some supplies but is still waiting for more, like a medical crib and bath chair, to be approved by Medicaid. Therapists come to their home out in Henrietta several times a week to work with the little girl, and that's a good thing considering Baker has no car. It broke down months ago.

Baker said family, friends, fellow church members and mostly her two sons are a major source of support.

"I have to be her mommy too and they understand and they give me and show me that they understand and I love that about them."

She says she's here to take care of this precious little girl now, and will let God and the justice system deal with the rest.

"They tell you at the hospital that your child will never be able to walk again or talk again. I have a God and I know what things can happened and what he can do."

We tried to speak to Nikey ourselves, who's free after posting $25,000 bond.   No one came to the door.
