ONTARIO, N.Y. — An unexpected resignation has the Ontario Town Board looking for a new town supervisor.

Joe Molino announced his departure just four days after he was sworn in Monday, citing personal reasons.

There's no word yet what the town's plan will be moving forward.

Former supervisor John Smith says the town board can appoint an interim supervisor who would serve one year until a special election is held.

Molino defeated Smith in a close race that was tied until absentee ballots were counted.

Smith says he'd consider returning to the job if asked.

"I would have to weigh my options out at this point in time," Smith said. "I've had a couple of careers already, but I do love my community and that would be a big factor in any decision I might make in that regard. But I think that'd be way too early to speculate, that's up to the town board to look at the situation."

Smith says he's confident the town's department heads can handle day-to-day operations until a new leader is appointed.
