With frigid temperatures continuing into next week, doctors are reminding people of the potential danger associated with the cold.
It may sound obvious, but one of the most important things experts say you can do is wear the proper clothing. That includes a bulky coat, warm hat and mittens. Dr. Joshua Zwart at Highland Hospital says mittens are better than gloves because your hands will stay warmer with your fingers together.
The doctor it's also important to pay attention to early signs of hypothermia.
"The first sign that cold weather exposure is starting to impact your body is cold stress which is a little bit of a decrease in temperature of your body," said Zwart. "You might start shivering and starting to feel like you're struggling to control your temperature. That's the very first sign of early hypothermia and that's when you need to head inside."
According to Dr. Zwart, dry warm heat is best when you need to escape the cold, such as sitting in front of a heater or fireplace.
