It seems like every year after the holidays, more people get sick.
On their Respiratory Illnesses Data Channel, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rate the national community snapshot as either minimal, low moderate high or very high. Since last Friday, New York and the nation are in the red. This means a high level of people are seeking health care for respiratory illness, including COVID-19, RSV, the flu and whooping cough.
CDC data shows a high level of cases in New York.
Norovirus cases are also rising; experts say symptoms can include fever, vomiting and diarrhea.
"Norovirus is a great survivor on inanimate objects. That’s why it is very important if you’re in close contact with someone within the household, please wash down the surfaces very carefully,” said Dr. Thomas Russo with the University at Buffalo Department of Medicine. “Diluted bleach is the best means to eradicate this virus."
Many of these respiratory illnesses can lead to pneumonia if those infected don't get rest and seek treatment.
Russo added that the best way to protect yourself is if you know people who are infected, urge them to stay home. If you are in close contact, wash your hands frequently and don't let infected individuals prepare food that will be eaten by others.
