PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Pittsford Central School District is one of only five districts statewide that does not have full day kindergarten, but come September that may no longer be the case.

District officials announced Tuesday that Pittsford will receive $1.3 million in transitional aid from the state legislature over the next three years. It will allow them to begin a full day kindergarten program.

It's been a goal of school administrators for some time. Last year, they asked voters for the money, but because the increase would have exceeded a 2 percent tax cap, voters did not approve.

"So last year, our favorable percent of the vote was 54 percent," said Pittsford School Superintendent Michael Pero. "With the new tax cap laws we needed 60 percent, we needed a super-majority, so, while we had the majority, it still didn't pass. And this year, we're able to do it within the tax cap, and at the same time not have to cut additional programs."

The Pittsford School Board has the final say — they'll vote on the proposal April 16th.
