Criminal charges were filed in connection with the drowning of a 6-year-old girl last week in the Erie Canal.

The two adults responsible for Aliyah Williams’ supervision at Henpeck Park on Thursday were also in possession of a half-pound of marijuana, according to police. It’s there that 6-year-old Aliyah Williams drowned in the Erie Canal.

“We intend to charge both individuals with endangering the welfare of a child based on their lack of care provided for Aliyah Williams, which led to her death,” said Greece Police Chief Patrick Phalen.

Aliyah Williams was at the park with her 11-year-old sister, her 23-year-old cousin Tyler Kanaley and his friend, 25-year-old Laura McCasland. The two were visiting from out of state when they took the kids to the park to go canoeing. Greece police say it’s when Aliyah went to grab her sandals that she fell in the water unsupervised.

“Bottom line is if you’re charged with the care of young children, you have to watch them, especially next to bodies of water. I don’t care if it’s a swimming pool — kids die every year by falling into swimming pools," added Phalen.

When marijuana was found in the vehicle that the suspects drove to the park, police say it was enough to get a warrant to search the grandfather’s home where the two were staying. Officers say they found 31 pounds of pot at the home.

The two are being held in the Monroe County Jail for third-degree possession of marijuana and will be charged this week with first-degree possession of marijuana along with endangering the welfare of a child.

“The mom dropped the kids off at the grandfather's house. The parents are incredibly upset. They are having a very hard time, they are not well,” added Phalen.
