A dangerous scene played out Thursday night at Griffiss International Airport. A military helicopter crashed with six-soldiers on board. While no one was seriously hurt, Melissa Krull explains there was still a lot of damage done in the video above.
ROME, N.Y. -- Helicopters doing maneuvers isn't unusual at Griffiss International Airport, but what happened Thursday night was.
"They had landed. They were taxiing, and not sure what happened after that but they struck the tower that's just behind me," said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente.
The helicopter from Fort Drum was carrying six soldiers.
One-person was treated for a minor injury.
"The site was secured relatively quickly and then the military came," Picente said.
According to the Oneida County Executive, most of the damage wasn't done to the tower, but to the helicopter and this county building.
"Debris went completely through the building. So we have to assess what those damages are on various points," Picente said. "And as you can see, this is a fairly new building so we're gonna assess that and see what though damages are. Don't have a number on that right now but it will be pretty significant."
Picente said it could have been worse. Thankfully no one was in the building because of how late it was.
The air field has been reopend while the military investigates the cause of the crash.
