NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Niagara Catholic Junior-Senior High School announced that it would be closing its doors indefinitely Wednesday.

Judith Nolan Powell, Catholic Diocese Board of Trustee president, said lower enrollment numbers and a lost subsidy from the Buffalo Diocese were factors in the decision.

“The reasons for it happening are many. But the real clencher is that the diocese of Buffalo can no longer provide the financial support they’ve given us 'cause they’ve got their own financial issues."

More than 120 students will now have to find a new school to attend this fall.

Parents were called to an emergency meeting Wednesday evening.

Many said they were blindsided by the news.

“Both my daughters loved going here,” said Tim O’Gara. “We’re shocked and disappointed."

Current students will have the option to transfer to other catholic schools including Cardinal O’Hara and schools in Buffalo area.

The school also hosted a separate meeting for faculty and staff.

Powell says there will be assistance to help instructors get employment at other area schools.
