BUFFALO, N.Y. — Dozens of people enjoy the views and company at Buffalo's Broderick Park every day.

But the calm was shattered Monday when a man went over the railing in search of driftwood and ran into trouble. Another man went in to save him. They both drowned.

"A terrible tragedy,” Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown (D) said. “Two lives have been lost."

City officials are once again reminding people of the dangers of the Niagara River there.

"Do not attempt to enter these bodies of water. Do not even think you can sit on the edge of a rock and dangle your feet in. All it takes is for you to slip or lose your footing and it's going to be a tragedy,” said Capt. Jeff Rinaldo, Buffalo Police Department.

"If you swim there, you're probably not going to make it out alive,” said Brown.

City officials say they stand by the park's safety and improvements that have been made there over the years, but they say they are now considering taking a few more steps to ensure everyone's security.

"There were some life rings that were installed years and years and years ago. Unfortunately, most of them ended up getting vandalized or stolen. I know currently the city is looking at a new type of device that's a life ring with a rope that's encased in a box. If the box is open or if the glass is broken, an alarm is sent to dispatch to notify 911 that there's been an activation of that thing. But again, we also don't want to send a message of encouraging people to even have the slightest belief that it's OK because if something happens, someone can throw a ring,” said Rinaldo.

"We have continued over the years to stress to people not to swim. We don't think a fence, if someone is trying to get into the water to swim, would keep them out. Or to do something else, we just encourage people to be responsible,” said Brown.

On Tuesday, city crews were replacing "no swimming" signs right in the area where the men went over.
